I never intended to be a realtor. I choose what I believed to be my path when I was sixteen. At the time, the most important thing to me was playing soccer at university. Professionally, I knew I wanted to help people and have a meaningful impact on their lives. Kinesiology seemed like a perfect fit. After graduating from university, I decided I’d take a year away from school for the first time since kindergarten. I worked as a server and was paying off my student loans.
One year became two, and I decided I needed to make a change. I was going to go to the University of Calgary to do my Masters in Applied Exercise Physiology. I had recently moved in with my now husband, but out of curiosity, I continued looking at homes for sale and rent.
I remember the conversation so clearly. We were driving home and I was looking at homes on my phone. He asked me if I was unhappy with our new living situation. He thought when I was looking at homes online that I was looking for my own place.
When I cleared it up he made an offhand suggestion that I look into being a realtor. It had been so long since I considered a profession outside of Kinesiology. After a few weeks of thinking about it, I decided to reach out to a few realtors I knew. They agreed to meet with me and discuss what their daily life was like.
After meeting with three agents, who all ran very different businesses and specialized in different areas of the city, I started to gain some clarity.
I wanted to be an entrepreneur like my parents. I remember growing up, my parents worked long hours at their home office. They went out on a limb when I was a baby and started a rammed earth construction business. They’re passionate about the environment and wanted their work to align with their values. As you can imagine, it wasn’t always easy, and it took a lot of early mornings and late nights. I definitely got my work ethic from them!
The amazing thing was... even though my parents were busy, they were never too busy to be parents. They never missed a game. We always ate meals together as a family, and if I needed help with my homework, they were always there to help. They were able to be successful in business without sacrificing their relationship with their kids.
I loved real estate and design and most importantly, realtors help people and have a meaningful impact on their lives. That was the exact reason I went into Kinesiology. I was excited, and for the first time in years, I knew what my path was. Regardless of the 90% failure rate within 2 years, I was confident I would succeed. That was four years ago and I’ve never looked back.

You’re busy with your kids and your work, and just like my parents were there for me, I want to make sure that selling your home doesn’t take away from your time to be a parent.
